Red Crowned Parrot

Red Crowned Parrot

Red-crowned Parrot (Amazona viridigenalis), also known as the Green-cheeked Amazon, is a vibrant and intelligent bird known for its striking appearance and charismatic personality. Native to the lowland forests and scrublands of northeastern Mexico, this parrot has also made its mark in urban areas of southern Texas and California, where feral populations have established themselves in city parks and neighborhoods.

Adorned in brilliant green plumage, the Red-crowned Parrot lives up to its name with a bold splash of bright red across its forehead and crown. It also features hints of vivid blue behind the eyes and flashes of red and yellow on the wings when in flight. These colors, combined with a strong, curved beak and expressive eyes, give the bird a lively, alert appearance that matches its energetic behavior.

Highly social and vocal, Red-crowned Parrots are often seen in noisy flocks, flying in tight formation or gathering in treetops to chatter, preen, and forage. Their calls are loud, raucous, and unmistakable—a chorus of squawks, whistles, and mimicry that reflects their high intelligence and emotional expressiveness.

Though beautiful and engaging, the Red-crowned Parrot faces serious threats in the wild due to habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade. It is currently classified as endangered, making conservation efforts and awareness vital to its survival.

Symbolizing spirit, resilience, and the colorful energy of the tropics, the Red-crowned Parrot is more than just a pretty face—it’s a feathered ambassador for endangered wildlife and a favorite among bird lovers who value both beauty and brains.
