Gray Hawk

Gray Hawk

Gray Hawk (Buteo plagiatus) is a sleek and graceful raptor of the American Southwest and parts of Central and South America. With its smooth, silvery-gray plumage, bold black-and-white tail bands, and piercing yellow eyes, the Gray Hawk is a striking presence in the sky and a favorite among birders lucky enough to spot it soaring above desert canyons or riparian woodlands.

Though medium-sized, the Gray Hawk is agile and fast, often seen gliding low over treetops or perched motionless on a branch, scanning for its next meal. It primarily hunts small reptiles like lizards and snakes, making quick, precise dives to capture its prey. In flight, its broad wings and banded tail give it a buoyant, elegant style that’s both commanding and refined.

This hawk is especially known for its haunting, whistled call — a rising, mournful “klee-oo” that echoes through the heat of the day. During the breeding season, pairs put on an aerial display of acrobatics and high-pitched calls, reinforcing their bond in the treetops.

As a symbol of quiet power, watchfulness, and desert resilience, the Gray Hawk reminds us that beauty often soars just above the horizon, especially for those willing to look up.
